French Life
British people often think that the French are a law unto themselves, only conforming with European rules when it suits them and not allowing their government to enforce rules about behaviour. French Life means doing your own thing. So it was with some astonishment that I learned that the “no more plastic bags” rule was not being brought in directly in the U.K. because the government worried that people wouldn’t accept it! Here in France amongst all these independent disregarders of the rules, the new regulations arrived without a fuss. Yes, we moaned for the first couple of weeks when we forgot our bags, but no one thinks about it any more. British visitors admire the system and my early visiting friends bought a selection of the attractive, infinitely useful bags to take home.French life obviously involves conforming when important issues like the environment, are at stake.
