Insurance and Water Damage

In many instances water damage isn’t covered by homeowners insurance. For this reason it is important to be careful and protect your real and personal property from water damage.

Flood damage isn’t covered by the standard policy. You will have to get separate flood insurance to protect yourself from flood damage.

As a general rule if the damage is caused or allowed to happen due to your neglect, your house insurance policy won’t cover it. You must take reasonable steps to protect your property at all times and not just expect that your policy will cover everything.

For example, if your house is damaged by a storm you have an obligation to protect it and its contents from water damage. Your home insurance won’t pay if you leave a broken window unrepaired for too long.

Take care to protect your property at all times because there are a lot of limitations and exclusions in the standard home insurance policy.
